Structural Steel Engineering

Structural steel engineering or Structural engineering is a field considered a specialty in civil engineering, which commonly involved in the design of buildings and large non-building steel/metal structures. Structural steel engineering theory is based upon physical laws and experiential knowledge of the structural performance of various materials and geometries. Structural building engineering is primarily driven by the creative manipulation of materials and forms to achieve its functional requirements.

Structural steel engineering design that usually employs simple structural elements to build complex structural systems must ensure whether that the design is practically built, able to stand up and function safely.

With a rich experience in the business of structural building engineering in the areas of pre-engineered buildings, space frames and construction of steel structures, we have been ascertaining each of our client’s needs and their fulfillment.

PEB Building Engineering & Construction Company

A PEB or pre-engineered building is to be fabricated using best-suited raw materials and manufacturing methods that can proficiently satisfy a wide range of structural and visual design requirements. These buildings are also called Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings (PEMB) or Engineered Metal Buildings (EMB).

Assemblies of I-shaped members, often referred as I beams (formed by welding together steel plates to form the I section) are field-assembled to form the entire frame of the pre-engineered building. Other forms of primary framing can include trusses, mill sections rather than three-plate welded, castellated beams etc.

In order to accurately design a PEB/pre-engineered building, structural engineers consider the clear span between bearing points, bay spacing, roof slope, wind uplift, deflection criteria, live loads, dead loads, collateral loads, internal crane system and maximum practical size and weight of fabricated members.

Advantages of PEBs

Larger span: Up to 60 meters without any columns in between.

Faster construction: PEB can save up to 50% construction time compared to conventional methods.

Cost effective: Lower foundation cost with wider bay spacing. Best utilization of materials, built-to-design steel sections and faster construction, all lead to direct & indirect cost savings.

Expandable & Transferable: PEB permits future expansion & relocation.

Custom designed: To suit specific need of the client & the location.

4C, the well-reputed PEB company in South India, is well equipped to provide end to end design and engineering solutions for PEBs irrespective of any extent of Engineering complexities. We gained trust as the best steel buildings supplier with successful completion of numerous PEBs in Chennai, Coimbatore, Cochin, Bangaluru etc.

Space Frames

In structural engineering, a space frame, also called ‘braced frameworks’, ‘latticed structures’ or ‘reticulated structures’, is a truss like, lightweight rigid structure constructed from interlocking strut in a geometric pattern. Space frames generally consist of double and multi-layer grids in flat or free forms built from aluminum or tubular steel struts, can be used to span large areas with few interior supports. Like the truss, a space frame is strong as it’s bracing members create the triangulation that stabilizes the structure and it’s flexing loads (bending moments) are transmitted as tension and compression loads along the length of each strut.

Flat space frames have been typically used as roof systems, but they can also be used to support floors. Arenas, Atriums, entryways, shopping malls, canopies, terminals, exhibit pavilions, swimming pool covers, convention centers, mosques, reservoir covers, space stations, grandstands, sport facilities, churches, stadium pavilions, sloped glazing, warehouses, towers and floating platforms may also be constructed from space frames.

Space frames can be generally classified as per the following:

Curvature classification

  • Space plane covers. These spatial structures are composed of planar substructures. Barrel vaults. This type of vault has a cross section of a simple arch.
  • Spherical domes and other compound curves.

Classification by the arrangement of its elements

  • Single layer grid. All elements are located on the surface to be approximated.
  • Double layer grid. The elements are organized in two parallel layers with each other at a certain distance apart.
  • Triple layer grid. Elements are placed in three parallel layers, linked by the diagonals.

Advantages of Space Frame Structures

  • Provide strong resistance and economic efficiency
  • Provides complete freedom in large span area
  • Light and easy to handle, demountable steel elements, and their assembly is safe and time saver.
  • Provides column-free space, aesthetic appearances.
  • Offers flexibility and adaptability
  • Customizable to specific project needs from school to aviation, from auditorium to shopping malls etc.
  • Best fit to any structures with their outstanding and elegant designing
  • Perfectly interfacing with any structures whether new or renovation works

Conventional Steel Structures

Conventional steel structures are very common in industrial construction and it is suitable for total as well as partial site fabrication. As these conventional structures have simple connections and use low tensile steel, fabricating and designing its structure is simple and easy. Since hot rolled sections are used as primary members, distortion, sweep and buckling is less likely to occur for a well-designed structure thus very good performance can be assured. Carrying out any additions/changes in structure is also possible any time without much difficulty.

Classification of Steel Structures:

  • Tension Members (Chord Members in trusses)
  • Compression Members (Columns in buildings)
  • Cruss Systems and Frame Systems
  • Built-up Members and Structures
  • Shell Structures
  • Suspension Structures

Classification Based on Shape:

  • Classical Skeleton framing
  • Steel truss
  • Rigid frames
  • Arches
  • Domes
  • Cable supported Roofs
  • Classical system supported by beams, girders and columns.
  • Beams: W or S shapes, Channel shapes for roof purlins
  • Columns: generally W shapes
